From Dan McClain…
I got it! I got it!
I’m so thankful that God has blessed me with three wonderfully unique children. They each have their own personalities. One of them in particular has a very strong desire to do things on his own. To protect his identity I will call him Puppy. Whether he is putting on his shoes, spelling a word, or reaching a box on a high shelf he does not want any help. If he asks for help, and I begin to help, he will quickly swat his hands at me and say, “I got it! I got it!” The moment he gets past the barrier that he was stuck on he wants to take back control.
He comes by this personality trait honestly. I have been known to have an independent spirit. Through my son I am learning more about what my behavior looks and feels like to my Heavenly Father.
In Matthew 19 Jesus has an encounter with a wealthy man. In the encounter the man is asking Jesus for help. “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” After asking the man if he had broken any commandments the may replied, “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. He is sad because he does not want to surrender his possessions perhaps but he is also sad because he does not want to surrender his control and independence.
Have you ever struggled with something and finally reached a point where you are broken so you surrendered it to God? Then after some time passes you find yourself back doing the same thing over and over again. This is you saying to God, “I got it! I got it!” There is no joy found in that. True joy comes in the experiences that God desires for you through a life surrendered to His good and perfect will.
Matthew 16:25 (NIV): For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. Below are some of the lyrics from Gungor’s song, Giving It All. A fitting song in relation to this subject.
You are the author of life.
Just one word and I am free.
You are the Savior and I need Your grace to rescue me.
I surrender.
We’re giving it all to You
We’re giving it all to You
Our hearts cry out
We need You now
We’re giving it all to You
You are the fountain of life
Just one drop and I am filled.
You are my joy and desire; I resign to Your will I surrender
