CORE

In April, we are launching a new community group called CORE.  CORE is the overall name of a series of 4-6 week long community groups that will be focused on studying specific ‘core’ beliefs of Christianity.  We anticipate there being four different ‘tracks’ for CORE, and each one of those ‘tracks’ looking at 4-6 different subjects.

The one that we’re launching in April will be called Track 1, and be looking at the following four questions:

  • What is the Bible?
  • What is God like?
  • What is the Trinity?
  • What is prayer?

In Colossians, we see some things that Paul is praying for…

Colossians 1:9-13:  For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He wants the believers to among other things, grow in their knowledge of God.  Not simply for the sake of knowledge, but because growing to understand God and His Word better will lead to things like strength, endurance, patience, and thankfulness.  In short, growing in the knowledge of God is one significant way that we grow as Christ followers, and live a life worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work.

Or as our vision statement says, to grow to be Devoted to Jesus, Dedicated to One Another, and Driven to Reach People.  Through CORE, our hope is to be intentional about pursuing such a way of life through studying basic, yet life changing truths about God and His Word.  And doing it in the environment of relationships, around tables, and alongside one another.

The teaching will be done by Wayne Grudem via DVD.  Pastor James MacDonald describes Grudem and his teaching this way, “As one of the most brilliant Bible scholars of our generation, Wayne Grudem takes the core beliefs of our faith and makes them practical for followers of Jesus Christ – new and mature alike.”

So CORE is for all, whether you’re brand new to following Jesus or you’ve been following Him for years.  Whether you’re a student or an adult.  Our prayer is that through our time together, we will not only grow in our relationship with Jesus, but with one another, and in our love for those yet to be reached.  We were designed to follow Jesus alongside others in the family of God.
