What are 1 or 2 things the Lord has been teaching you in lately?
This last year has no doubt exposed areas in my life that need attention and growth. A couple of those areas, is the control I think I may have had in my life and my surroundings, and trusting in the Lord in his goodness and sovereignty as almighty creator. If we are honest with ourselves, we all tend to like to have some control in our lives…right? Well, nothing was more of a gut punch than 2020 it seemed. I would’ve never thought anything like this was on its way at the beginning of 2020, when I was in the stands cheering on our R-B Rockets high school basketball team going to the state final 4 in March 2020. Then as quick as it happened, it was gone. Little did we all know it was just the beginning of several disappointing closings and changes of plans. Plans that I didn’t want to adjust to, but had no control over the situation. It seemed like the changes were coming one after another like waves in the ocean. It was a great lesson in surrendering my control to the Lord, opening my eyes to what God has in store to glorify him, realizing how really helpless I am in these kind of life changing situations, and how much more I need to focus on running to him and trust in his providence…because God hasn’t left us. He is more present now than ever. I couldn’t help but think of Proverbs 19:21 for my wake up call, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand”.
Besides serving as an elder, where and how do you serve within the church?
Our family has been coming to Crosspoint for about 7yrs now. My wife and I have been leading a community group for the past 6yrs. We have really developed some great friendships over that time and have enjoyed getting to study God’s word and do life with fellow brothers and sisters. It’s such a great way to connect and meet people. I’m so thankful we said, “yes”, when we were prompted by the Funk’s to step out and lead. I have helped through the yrs doing kind of whatever. I have helped usher some, greet and welcome people, helped teach Sunday school with my wife (Sara), and helped with HYPE.
What is one of your greatest joys serving as an elder?
I would say a couple things. First, is the plurality, love, brotherhood, and unity we have on the elder team for one another. I really think the health of the church is determined by having all those things present in leadership. By God’s grace we do. The second, is seeing how God kept me from not passing out when giving my 1st sermon on a Sunday morning…lol. It’s was so amazing to feel his peace and comfort each time I’ve taught on a Sunday.
What is one of your challenges that you face as an elder?
Flaming arrows from the crafty enemy. With that said, I would say thoughts of doubt, self-condemnation that I’m not “measuring” up as a leader in the church. Satan loves to twist things and make it works driven vs just being obedient for the Lord and serving in a capacity driven by loving him and love for his church. I love truth in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”.
How can the church pray for your heart and life?
I would say for continued obedience in serving him first and foremost in all areas of my life- family, church, work, etc.
Movie: Hoosiers, The Bourne Trilogy, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars
Restaurant: I’m always up for a good pizza place. I grew up going to Davis Bros a lot, so I would say that is probably my favorite. Nothing like a Deluxe pizza, parm, and a bottle of Frank’s RedHot by your side 😉. I will also say that a favorite place for date night for Sara and I is Uptown Grill in LaSalle.
Food: Pizza, smoked meats, and burgers.
Book: I have to admit this is one area that God is growing me in (outside of my morning Bible time). I have always been more of a person that like to do things with his hands. He is just growing me in turning pages with my hands, lol. I really like Gentle and Lowly, books by RC Sproul, and always love to read something by John Piper. I also like to read sports biographies.
Hobby: I enjoying working outside, fishing, hunting, disc golfing, walks with Sara, and just being active. I love sports, so watching all my kids in their sports activities has been a blessing. Hopefully, I can see more of them “in-person” in 2021!
*Also, if you’ve read this far…ask Ben how to pronounce the word, restaurant.
